Written in Persian verse and addressed to Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb Alamgir, the Zafarnama was composed after repeated betrayals, broken oaths, and injustices committed by imperial authorities. Despite enduring immense personal loss and suffering, Guru Gobind Singh Ji writes not with bitterness, but with clarity, dignity, and unwavering truthfulness.

A defining feature of the Zafarnama is the Guru’s absolute commitment to truth. Guru Gobind Singh Ji does not merely condemn the emperor—he acknowledges what Aurangzeb does rightly. The Guru recognizes that the emperor prays regularly, earns his living, and outwardly observes religious discipline. By doing so, Guru Sahib establishes that his words are not driven by hatred or personal grievance, but by moral honesty.

Having spoken what is right, the Guru then speaks what is necessary. He fearlessly calls out Aurangzeb for his dishonesty, broken promises, and misuse of religious authority, especially the violation of solemn oaths sworn in the name of God. Guru Gobind Singh Ji makes it clear that religious observance without truth and justice is hollow, and that power devoid of morality is ultimately defeated.

The Zafarnama proclaims that true victory does not belong to armies or empires, but to those who stand firm in righteousness. Guru Gobind Singh Ji writes not as a supplicant or rebel, but as a sovereign of conscience, accountable only to Waheguru.

Aurangzeb’s Response
Historical accounts suggest that the Zafarnama deeply unsettled Aurangzeb, prompting letters in response and an invitation for Guru Gobind Singh Ji to meet him. Though this meeting never occurred due to the emperor’s death, the exchange itself stands as testimony to the transformative moral force of the Guru’s words.

ਇਹ ਚਿੱਤਰ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਜ਼ਫਰਨਾਮਾ ਲਿਖਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਦਰਸਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ—ਇੱਕ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਪੱਤਰ ਜੋ ਨੈਤਿਕ ਸੱਚਾਈ ਅਤੇ ਆਤਮਿਕ ਸਰਬਭੌਮਤਾ ਦਾ ਅਮਰ ਐਲਾਨ ਹੈ।

ਜ਼ਫਰਨਾਮਾ ਫ਼ਾਰਸੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਾਵਿ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਮੁਗਲ ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹ ਔਰੰਗਜ਼ੇਬ ਆਲਮਗੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਬੋਧਿਤ ਸੀ। ਲਗਾਤਾਰ ਧੋਖੇ, ਟੁੱਟੀਆਂ ਕਸਮਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਅਨਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਬਾਵਜੂਦ—ਅਤੇ ਅਪਾਰ ਦੁੱਖ ਸਹਿਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਵੀ—ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਇਹ ਪੱਤਰ ਗੁੱਸੇ ਜਾਂ ਬਦਲੇ ਦੀ ਭਾਵਨਾ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ, ਸਗੋਂ ਸਪਸ਼ਟਤਾ, ਸੰਤੁਲਨ ਅਤੇ ਸੱਚਾਈ ਨਾਲ ਲਿਖਦੇ ਹਨ।

ਜ਼ਫਰਨਾਮੇ ਦੀ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ਤਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀ ਅਟੱਲ ਸੱਚਾਈ ਪ੍ਰਤੀ ਵਚਨਬੱਧਤਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਔਰੰਗਜ਼ੇਬ ਦੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਉਹ ਗੁਣ ਵੀ ਸਵੀਕਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਉਹ ਠੀਕ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਰਸਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਔਰੰਗਜ਼ੇਬ ਨਿਯਮਤ ਨਮਾਜ਼ ਅਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਰੋਜ਼ੀ ਕਮਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਰਸਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਾਲਣਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਸਪਸ਼ਟ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਚਨ ਵੈਰ ਜਾਂ ਨਿੱਜੀ ਰੋਸ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ, ਸਗੋਂ ਨੈਤਿਕ ਇਮਾਨਦਾਰੀ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਿਤ ਹਨ।

ਸੱਚ ਬੋਲਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ, ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਲੋੜੀਂਦਾ ਸੱਚ ਵੀ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਹ ਨਿਡਰ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਔਰੰਗਜ਼ੇਬ ਦੀ ਬੇਇਮਾਨੀ, ਵਾਅਦਾਖ਼ਿਲਾਫ਼ੀ ਅਤੇ ਧਰਮ ਦੇ ਗਲਤ ਉਪਯੋਗ ਨੂੰ ਉਜਾਗਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ—ਖ਼ਾਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ’ਤੇ ਖਾਧੀਆਂ ਕਸਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੋੜਨ ਦੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਪਸ਼ਟ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਸੱਚ ਅਤੇ ਨਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਅਭਿਆਸ ਖਾਲੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਨੈਤਿਕਤਾ ਤੋਂ ਰਹਿਤ ਤਾਕਤ ਆਖ਼ਰਕਾਰ ਹਾਰ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

ਜ਼ਫਰਨਾਮਾ ਇਹ ਐਲਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਅਸਲ ਜਿੱਤ ਫੌਜਾਂ ਜਾਂ ਸਲਤਨਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ, ਸਗੋਂ ਸੱਚ ਅਤੇ ਧਰਮ ’ਤੇ ਡਟ ਕੇ ਖੜ੍ਹੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਇਹ ਪੱਤਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਅਰਜ਼ੀਦਾਰ ਵਜੋਂ ਨਹੀਂ, ਬਲਕਿ ਅੰਤਰਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸਰਤਾਜ ਵਜੋਂ ਲਿਖਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਅੱਗੇ ਜਵਾਬਦੇਹ ਹਨ।

ਔਰੰਗਜ਼ੇਬ ਦਾ ਉੱਤਰ
ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕ ਵੇਰਵਿਆਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ, ਜ਼ਫਰਨਾਮੇ ਨੇ ਔਰੰਗਜ਼ੇਬ ਨੂੰ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਝੰਝੋੜਿਆ। ਉਸ ਨੇ ਜਵਾਬੀ ਪੱਤਰ ਲਿਖੇ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਦਕਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਿਲਣ ਦਾ ਨਿਯੋਤਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਭਾਵੇਂ ਇਹ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਔਰੰਗਜ਼ੇਬ ਦੀ ਮੌਤ ਕਾਰਨ ਸੰਭਵ ਨਾ ਹੋ ਸਕਿਆ, ਪਰ ਇਹ ਸੰਵਾਦ ਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਬਚਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਆਤਮਿਕ ਅਤੇ ਨੈਤਿਕ ਸ਼ਕਤੀ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਣ ਹੈ।
